Moka blog with books we proposed quite a challenge in order to reread all the volumes of the Rougon-Macquart, by reason of one book per month, which should lead us until August 2012! Phew, large program but it is precisely because we have a relationship like that, Emile Zola me and I could not resist: discovered in high school, I really stopped reading this author and it is even a course on stylistics in Zola that I decided to continue my studies to PhD letters, even if ultimately my PhD focused on any something else. In short, Zola is one of the writers who made me love literature point to want (need) to study and then teach it today in my new profession, to transmit taste.
Fortune Rougon is the first volume of the mass of the Rougon-Macquart but it is often not the one you read first. Yet it is essential to grasp the essence of the work since it marks the birth of the dichotomy between the two branches of the family, from the same mother, Adelaide Fouque, but both the husband's gardener, Rougon, the Other Lover's smuggler Macquart. Legitimate / illegitimate, respectable or not ... everything is said. The genealogy will be the crux of all volumes of the series, creating a whole set of similarities but also rejection between the characters. Only by reading Fortune Rougon we can truly understand the ins and outs of these passionate relationship. This book asks also the intrinsic relationship between the great story (here the coup that led to the Second Empire) and the history of individuals who derive profit or not.
Beyond these reasons that make reading the first volume indispensable if we want to understand all, what I like, me, in this novel lies elsewhere. Like
talent as a portrait of Zola, who manages to rise literally faces but also of souls in the eyes of the reader. In rereading this volume, moreover, I perceived an irony or humor, which I had not felt when I first read it, probably because I was too young at the time. Painting most buried thoughts is simply delicious.
What I also like the characters that appetite: hunger for power for Pierre Rougon appetite for possession of his wife Felicity, have no appetite for anything Antoine Macquart appetites for which figures are ready to sacrifice everything. The title suggests the end of this volume, namely the victory Rougon, but interest focuses on small arrangements with history, with convictions on the shenanigans that lead to this outcome as a result it itself. I finally
poetry of Zola, whose style is very colorful: the love between Silvere and Miette is a tragic beauty, very touching and innocent sweetness that makes it even more disgusting greed of the other characters because it is she, in a sense, causing the loss of two young lovers. That ticket
a bit messy but reflecting, I believe, everything I tried to reread this novel!
